Frequenters of this space will remember, perhaps, that my older daughter has been deeply phobic about needles for years. Getting a blood test done required valium and massive preparation; she's due for a tetanus shot and some other shots, and we just didn't have the psychic wherewithal to get it done.

And then yesterday the girl calls me: "Guess what I just did?" she asks. I bite: "What?"

"I got a flu shot! It wasn't even awful or anything! I mean, I flinched, but just a little."

It may not sound like it, but this is HUGE. I'm very proud of my girl. I'd say I'm proud of my woman, but she's really her own woman, and I'm just one of her home bases. Regardless, this is HUGE and I'm a proud Mama.

Yesterday was largely frivolous (and very delightfully so--lunch with [livejournal.com profile] klages overlooking China Basin, and dinner in Palo Alto with friends before seeing a double feature of Notorious and Suspicion). Today was for work. At least some. So while I gathered up all the left over lemon tree detritus--four 30-gallon bags worth!--for the compost truck tomorrow, the Magnificent Spouse did something we've been talking about for a while: he pulled up the really ugly, really dirty carpet in the front hallway. Underneath, as we had hoped but not been certain of, was oak flooring with decorative lamination. It needs to be sanded and varnished, but I can do this. The dog is a little bummed, as the carpet was one of her favorite places to go gnaw on bones. Sorry, dog. I'm so happy that the ugly has been swept back a bit!
