Just heard from my tenant in the Berkshires. These are lovely people who have taken excellent care of my house (which is a barn on 6.5 acres of hillside). It has been a great relief to know that the house was in their care for the past 4+ years.
Alas. They have found a house they're buying. While they have a year and a half to go on their lease, they'd just as soon not have to pay for a house they're not using. So they're going to try to find someone to take up the rest of the lease, we're going to do likewise, and I'm going to try really hard not to panic about bills and taxes. In the end, I imagine we're going to have to sell the place--what use do we have for a four-bedroom, 2.5 bath house in the Berkshires with four fireplaces, 40 foot ceilings, and a trapeze in the front hallway? It's pretty much my retirement fund (and the girls' college money, too). But at a moment when things have been feeling fraught, more fraughtness! Whoo hoo.
