I knew Live Journal was on its way out, but I didn't realize how... emergent the relocation effort would need to be--until this morning when I went in to see what was up and got gobsmacked with the new TOS. I have no problem with taking my business elsewhere, but I had meant to download all the entries I had on my LJ before I went. Now I either have to agree to the TOS to get my posts back, or kiss them--and a number of memories--g'bye.

That's a decision for tomorrow.

I am exceedingly lucky in that I am using an old-style layout and I was logged in at the time the changeover happened - I can still access my journal and read my list without agreeing, but I can't see other people's pages without doing so anonymously. (private window). It's possible - but untested - that you could log in via a comment page that way?

A friend of mine suggested using https://noscript.net - I haven't tried this, but it might just work.

Undoubtedly, people will find solutions in the next couple of days.

I stopped crossposting a couple of months ago, but hoped that LJ would rally again, since there are a couple of people there whom I only meet on LJ, so I guess I was a little more mentally prepared.

Best of luck with the no-script solution. I don't know whether desktop clients would work - that *should* get around the script issue, though apparently the ToS also contain the provision of 'if you are using the site, you are agreeing to our ToS'. Still, it would give me satisfaction to never click 'I agree'.

The XMLRPC interface that clients and backup scripts use is blocked until you click "agree". (Not that it would matter given the "any usage constitutes agreement" clause, but it's extra annoying.)

I'm not deleting anything, but it looks like DW is going to be my primary instead of my mirror from now on out. (I've got PDF backups of my LJ, year by year, including comments, so I don't have any worries on that account, either.)

But we're definitely in a sic transit gloria mundi phase right now, what with SFF-Net shutting down as well . . . the newsgroups there started their own slow fade back when LJ was still the new kid on the block, but the web pages and the email service were steady and reliable for years thereafter.

(Hell, some days I still miss GEnie.)
