I cordially loathe Rudy Giuliani, who was a bully and a thug as Mayor of New York, had a legitimately shining period of leadership after 9/11, and has been politically dining out on it ever since. So when even Rudy G is scolding Republicans of Congress for opposing long-denied aid to 9/11 first responders, you gotta know this isn't a partisan issue.
Never mind the human, moral reasons to support the bill: in terms of public perception, it's stupid to oppose it. (Especially now:Christmas? Deny medical aid and assistance to the people who risked their lives on 9/11? Way to look like the Grinch, Scrooge, and a kicker of puppies and moppets, guys.)
“It’s a terrible, terrible mistake to be seen as opposing relief for 9/11 heroes. This is one of those times when you get so wrapped up in the game that you forget to look and see what’s happening.” Ya think?
I'd say fine: if the Republicans opposing the bill dig in their toes, it's going to come back to bite their asses. Except that the men and women who were so celebrated and praised as heroes 9 years ago are literally dying for help.
ETA: Someone grew a braincell! The Senate passed it; it's gone to the House where it is expected to pass, and thence to the President for signature. Thank God.
