Happy Valentine's Day. It's a silly holiday, designed to encourage spending on frivolities, but it gives one an excuse to be silly, which is a plus.

I'm sitting on my bed doing my Sunday morning internet flyover, and I look up at the stuff on my bedside table. To say eclectic would be kind. To say disordered would be accurate but a little harsh. Does my bedside table say something about who I am?
The drawer to the table is full of mis-matched socks; about every two months I go through, sort them, find half a dozen pairs, and throw out the oldest of the singletons (on the theory that if their matches haven't turned up in a six-month, they're not likely to). The shelf underneath contains old comic books and magazines hastily stowed there in one of my infrequent attempts to tidy the place up. And on top, from back to front:
• a half-full bottle of daquiri-scented lotion one of the girls gave me several Valentine's days ago.
• a packet of circular knitting needles in which I have shoved a packet of #8 DPs and a packet of tapestry needles
• the current hat I'm knitting
• a mug filled with pens, colored pencils, scissors of dubious utility, a brass bookmark I never remember to use, and a thermometer for when sick children inhabit my bed
• various bits of paper I should have done something with before.
• a tape measure
• packets of buttons for the hats I've been making (there's a decorative button on the tab)
• a box in which a Girl Scout mug I was given came--in which I keep various things I want to keep together
• an envelope of mixed receipts for tax purposes
• a very mixed bag of books: viz
Eclipse One
The Lives of Medieval Women
Althea (my first book)
The Big Necessity (a book about the history of waste management)
The Fairy of Ku-She, by my friend Lucie Chin
The House of the Stag
The Detection Manual
The Beekeeper's Apprentice

• my cell phone
• the remotes for the cable box and TV
• a box of CocoaBella truffles from my Valentine
• a popsicle stick
• the game disk for Civilization 2 (which no longer runs on any of the household computers)
• various bits of instructions for the hats I've been knitting

I'm not sure what it says about me--I read, I watch TV, I knit, I tend to put things to one side with the best of intentions to return to them later. It's not squalor, but it is kinda a mess.

So: what's on your bedside table?
