Sweet New Year

We're going to an open house in a few hours. I thought I'd bring a cake. Actually, I tried one cake recipe--a pound cake I thought would be a good base for fondant--and then, just to be sure (because I hadn't made this pound cake before) I made a second cake. Overkill, right?
This one: other than the chocolate buttercream between the layers and the white piped letters and berries, it's covered in fondant. I'm rather pleased (though again I used the commercial fondant I have on hand rather than making my own. Maybe next week for that).
This is the second cake--plain yellow cake with buttercream. I had some left over flowers in the freezer, did faux-carnelli work on the top (properly carnelli should be done with royal icing, not buttercream, but life short) and used the frosting comb on the sides. That last is tricky: you really need a totally smooth surface to get an even pattern. Well, it's all a good-tasting work in progress.
How're y'all spending the first day of the year?
