Cake Madness

Last week, for the holiday party, I made a birthday cake for myself. It was my first fondant cake for common consumption, not terribly fancy, but amusing. My original plan was for it to say "It's not just the law, it's a good idea," but I ran out of time and patience.
Then, two days later, my friend
klages asked me to collaborate on a cake for her poker gathering. I provided the cake (plain yellow) and buttercream crumb frosting, and the technical knowhow and piping skills. She came up with the design (I had something else in my head--next time I'm asked to create a poker cake I'll submit my design). The little brown thing in the center is a totem used to designate a "kill pot" (she explained this to me, but it ran in one ear and out the other).
The chips were made of fondant (as were the pips around the sides of the cake) and the bottom was finished with piped green frosting. I am told that the poker players thought it was the bee's knees.
Next time, I make homemade fondant (we cut corners and used the premade stuff) which has a silkier texture and a better flavor. But, not bad for a first "design" cake.
