[personal profile] madrobins
About two weeks ago the owner of the corner store down the street (what in NYC we would refer to as a bodega) was tied up, robbed, beaten, and stabbed almost fatally. For what the papers often refer to as a "sleepy residential village" within San Francisco, this was shocking (not to say it would not be shocking anywhere else--but down the road in the Mission this is a little more commonplace). The community rose to support the Parks (the family that owns the store), helping keep the store open while they dealt with the owner's hospitalization and surgery, starting a recovery fund, etc. And last night 500+ of our neighbors (and me and the Spouse) met with the local police, our supervisor Bevan Duffty, BART police, reps. from the mayor's office, etc. to discuss what can be done. It was an interesting meeting: a few people there who clearly thought they were extras in Norma Rae, but more useful questions and answers.

Thursday night the Spouse, Emily and I will chaperone the owner during her close-up period and escort her to the bank and back. They're talking about block associations and stuff. Power to the people, even when the people is Us.
