Staying Positive

Remember Remington Steele? There's an episode in the second season (I think it was the second season) where someone blows up the agency offices, the characters' apartments, and they are seriously on the lam. It made for a great excuse for upclose-chemistry-enhancing interaction between Steele and Laura, and at one point he winds up telling her a story about his past and how he's able to keep reinventing himself. Something about working for a Greek who had worked for years to buy his own freighter, only to see it blow up in the harbor as it pulled out for its first voyage. Steele talks about feeling the horror and frustration of his friend's loss, and being stunned when he realizes that the guy is standing on the dock laughing. And he quotes the Greek, in tones of bemusement and wonder: "Don't you see? Now everything is new again!"
I didn't back up my damned laptop. I have the core files--my old writing stuff, and most of the more recent stuff. But the photos and iTunes stuff are gone. It's my own fault--it never occurred to me that they'd need to replace the hard drive for a trackpad problem. So I'm not only bummed about losing the notes for stories I'll have to remember, but pissed at myself for my stupidity. And yet life goes on. And, as the Greek said, "everything is new again." Time to fill up some white space.
