A Day for Complexities
24/9/09 10:59I'm getting only a bit of writing today, because I had to make five dozen cupcakes. Lemme 'splain. This weekend Avocado and some of her Girl Scout Cadette peers are doing their Silver Award project: hosting a council-wide Camporee for about 100 souls (maybe more...we hope). Avocado has been the food services wrangler: crafting a menu for Friday dinner, three meals plus snacks on Saturday, and Sunday brunch (at an overall budget of something like $10/person for meals), consulting with the parent who is food-services licensed and will be running the kitchen, coming up with a shopping list, and so on. Also helping with the overall planning of the event.
I, of course, have been dragooned in to help. I'm holding three workshops: two on cupcake decorating with frosting (no sprinkles! no dragees! just frosting!) and one (for the Brownies) on sugar molding. The cupcakes are for the two decorating workshops--enough for one per girl, plus extras for the inevitable breakage, droppage, and chaos. I'm making two batches of butter cream, have parchment and tips for four "stations" with four tips and four colors of frosting, and a small list of things for the girls to try. The sugar molding will be easier, as it's just, well, sugar, a bit of water, ziploc bags, and cardboard (to turn the molded sugar out on) and molds.
Before and after all this, I will likely be helping grill burgers and set up on Friday night, and policing the girls who are policing the area on Sunday morning. Expect me to be gibbering by Sunday night. Not that I'm not already, of course.
So today, in the midst of all this cake-and-Scouts related stuff, I also have Back to School night, plus a budget of calls to make for school tours, since we're starting the process of finding a high school for Avocado.
All this means I'll probably be playing more Solitaire than I should, but there has to be an escape valve somewhere.
