Cake, The Final Frontier

aberwyn, to make a birthday cake for her friend Karen's birthday. Karen, like many of us, likes her Star Trek, and was actually Tuckerized as "Admiral Williams" in one of the books. So I made a nice yellow-cake (yet a new recipe, in my endless but quest to Find the Perfect Yellow Cake...hummed to the tun of "To Dream the Impossible Dream") with buttercream frosting, then put the Star Fleet logo--made in fondant and dusted with bronze luster (an edible dust) on. The words at the bottom say "Happy Birthday" in Klingon. Geek? Me? Why do you ask?
What have I learned from this experience? 1) I really really love playing with fondant; 2) a star field is easier to imagine than to create, particularly if you're working in buttercream; 3) "Happy Birthday" in Klingon actually means "Forehead Birthday." According to the translator I found on line. While I was frosting the cake yesterday I kept coming up with other phrases in which "Forehead" could be swapped in for "Happy." I don't get out much.
It was a swell party; I wish we hadn't had to leave as early as we did, but the cake was eaten to the last drop, and the Birthday Admiral seemed very forehead.
