"John Williams Is The Man"
11/2/09 12:07Well, no, he's not. For my money, John Williams is mostly bombastic and is allowed far too much freedom by the directors he works with--his music is prescriptive (look! wonderment here. now cry. now, fear!) and his scores annoy the hell out of me. I cherish the story that Alfonso Cuaron, working on the third Harry Potter movie and contractually obligated to use Williams for the score, had a friend come in and do a demo track of what Cuaron wanted for the score, then gave the track to Williams and said "do it like that."
On the other hand, and you knew there was one, didn't you? he has written some immediately identifiable themes that have earwormed themselves into the public consciousness. In that spirit, I submit this, a four part a cappella tribute to John Williams and Star Wars, written and sung (I believe) by an a cappella group called Moosebutter, but acted by Corey Vidal. It made me feel rather warmly toward John Williams.
