Merry Christmas Eve.

This morning many large noisy trucks and earthmovers arrived out front, ready to start some inscrutable DPW job. I finished a cake for [livejournal.com profile] sfmarty to the accompaniment of jackhammers and poor Emily cowering behind my legs. Dauntless dog does not care for earthmovers out front.

Avocado, grousing about this unholiday-ish activity: "I say, let's give 'em a twenty and tell 'em to scoot."

Meanwhile, I have miles to go before I eep...and It's a Wonderful Life is playing at the Stanford Theatre tonight. Not sure the drive is worth it when we've got it on DVD, but...

I'm no particular kind of Christian, but Christmas is my holiday, nonetheless. But I think there's a deep need for humans to celebrate in the dead of winter: the return of the sun, the possibility of birth, the opportunities that a new year brings.

Whatever you celebrate, may your festivities be joyful, with good food, folks you love, music and lights and all the trimmings. And may the year ahead be one of new beginnings, peace, and a crawl toward greater prosperity for all the people of the world. I mean, why not?

And, in the words of A.A. Milne (who wrote my favorite Christmas poem ever): My blessings on you fall.
