This weekend YG had the Regional Championships skating competition in Roseville, about 15 miles north of Sacramento, on the same day that the Girl Scouts was having its "1000 Box Seller Hall of Fame" event at Raging Waters, also in Sacramento. So I told her that, since we were going to be in the neighborhood, we could stay over night and go to Raging Waters on our own the next day. YG's buddy Olivia was at the Saturday event, so in one of those in-retrospect-I-must-have-been-out-of-my-mind plans which are my hallmark, I arranged to pick Olivia up at the Scouts' bus at Raging Waters before taking YG to her competition, so that the girls could do the Raging Waters thing on Sunday as well. With certain amount of cursing bad directions on my part, all this was accomplished. YG's team, alas, came in second (the Tremors, YG's team, was down six skaters; the other team had sometime like twice the skaters, many of them older and larger--still, they skated very impressively). So Olivia, YG, and I headed back to the hotel, then out to dinner, then the girls went swimming in the hotel pool, and finally, back to bed.
Then, Sunday, off to Raging Waters. Some observations:
1) No matter how carefully I apply 55 SPF sunblock, some sun creeps through. I suppose I could wrap myself in burlap, but it's itchy and hard to swim in.
2) If you rent inner tubes for the day, you are apparently expected to have them with you all day, including in the bathrooms and restaurant. When you leave them, with your towels and other stuff draped over them, you return to your deck chair to find all the stuff pushed aside and the inner tubes gone. Grr.
3) The lockers they rent are too small to hold much of anything.
4) I did an informal survey, and roughly 25 percent of the visitors at Raging Waters had tattoos--many of them large and elaborate, pretty much covering one or more limb.
5) I know I'm carrying about 20 pounds I should lose, but I am still, for my age, a babe. I was impressed by some of the ingenious bathing suit solutions some people had found to deal with their poundage, and impressed by the what-the-hell bravery of the 250 pound woman in a red bikini. Good for her.
6) It was a very long drive home. My daughter and her friend are loud. I need more coffee.
