Rainy Day Miscellany
2/11/06 09:23It is cold and rainy today. Welcome to winter in San Francisco.
1) Emily is not pleased. It took two walks this morning to get her past her dismay at the wet and the umbrellas to do what was required of her. I do not know whether she's going to want to get any exercise, either. Right now she's curled up against my hip with her nose buried under her knee.
2) YG's entire fifth grade left this morning for an overnight trip to Point Bonita, on the far side of the Golden Gate Bridge. There's a YMCA camp there that does nature/science trips and conferences. This is the high point of the year for a lot of these kids--and for many of them it's the first time they've been away from home overnight without parents, etc. Where yesterday was clear and bright and cool, a perfect fall day, today is chilly and damp. So I packed the kid with her rain poncho, several sweaters, and many changes of socks. I'm sure they'll have a great time and learn many swell things.
3) The elections are next week. While I'm horrified that Macy*s SF store already has its Christmas displays up, I can definitely see racing through the next week to get done with all the dreadful ads (one ad for California Insurance Commissioner shows the opponent, Cruz Bustamente, holding out a paper sack while insurance company execs stuff it full of cash; Bustamente's response? a strange ad in which he mentions that he lost 70 pounds, and therefore should be voted in). Not to mention the Ohio campaign ad I read about yesterday, in which it's asserted that the Democratic candidate just lives to use tasers on 7-year-olds. Despite all the decrying of the current uncivil discourse in elections, I've read enough campaign speeches from the 19th century to suspect that this is just business as usual.
4) I should take down the Halloween lights, but they're cheery, and it's gray. So, tough. I'm going to have to disembowel and cook the spare pumpkin, though, if we're going to have any pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread this year. Mmm. Pumpkin bread. That's a nice warm, spicy thought for a cold, dreary day.
