Instant Friends
26/8/05 23:21Ever notice how some kids can have a casual friendship that is broken by time and distance and then...they get together again and it is as if no time, no distance, had ever intervened?
Tonight Younger Girl and I had dinner with an old friend and her daughter who are in town on vacation. YG and the visiting kid are both nine, both whip smart and funny . YG hadn't seen her friend in the nearly-three years since we moved out west, but in the way of small, smart, funny kids, they greeted each other as if they'd seen each other last week, had a splendid time running about the Yerba Buena playarea and the Metreon Center, and could only be separated by dint of a crowbar and lavish promises that they'd meet again on Sunday. It was a very nice dinner (since the girls were so thrilled with each other, it meant that Melissa and I could catch up too). But what was really fun was watching the reassertion of that friendship. I doubt the girls were as impressed as I was--they were busy having fun together.
