they really like her

Like every other public school district in most of this country, the SFUSD is hurting for cash. The principal of Sarcasm Girl's school sent out a note several weeks ago, asking for every student to contribute a ream of paper. So today, while we were at Office Despot getting school supplies, we picked up a case of paper (on the theory that we, who have so much more than some of the families at that school, could give a little more for those who can't give at all...or just forget). Then dropped it by the school, where I think SG was surprised to find an absolute froth of activity. We dropped off the big box of paper, and ran into several of the girl's teachers. They were all delighted to see her, looked forward to her senior year, and went out of their ways to tell me how cool she is. I was particularly struck by the teacher who told me that he'd never had SG in a class, but had seen her play, talked to her, and knew from other teachers what an asset to the school she was. And then we ran into Mr. Walker, the girl's world history teacher from last year. They're two of a kind: talkative, enthusiastic, opinionated, passionate. Okay, so he's black (and gay, I think) and Catholic, and she's caucasian and agnostic (I recuse myself from speculating on anything else). But they clearly enjoy each other--SG is devastated that he's not going to be teaching Government and Economics to her this year.
As we walked out I said "You know, they love you at that school." Rather awed, she said, "Well...yeah."
