Cyst Just Me?

Apparently the pain in my wrist is not from an RSI, sprain, or anything like that. It's a ganglion cyst. My mother, if memory serves, had one on the back of her wrist when I was a kid--the doctor smashed it with a book and! no more cyst. The one I have, which is right at the base of my thumb on the inside of my wrist, is not susceptible to such treatment. So my options are: try to be left-handed as much as possible for a month and see if the cyst reduces on its own (unlikely, but let's go minimalist to start) and; if that fails, surgery. Regional anaesthetic, outpatient procedure. Maybe they'd even let me watch (I love medical procedures, tho' me watching seems to squick the doctors out a bit). But that's if all else fails.
Meanwhile: ouch.
