I am not particularly bothered by a brief affaire between two consenting adults; it was dumb, but part of an old, old story. Further, Newsom's immediate apology was apparently heartfelt and unequivocal without being hand-wringing. I wish none of this had happened, because I like Newsom as mayor and would like to see him continue, and to have a long, useful career in politics, and this may have an impact upon his future.

But what really annoys me is the salacious, lipsmacking reports I saw on TV last night. Channel 11, the local NBC affliate, showed the clip of Newsom's apology five times in under fifteen minutes, and (despite man-in-the-street interviews largely saying "So Gavin Newsom is Human? So?") savored the question of whether the man-in-the-street would put up with this dreadful behavior.

I'm unclear: one report said that Alex Tourk went public about the affair (which his wife told him about as part of her 12 step rehab program) to explain why he was quitting as Newsom's campaign manager. But another report said that a fellow rehab-ee had gone to the media after hearing about the affair in a 12-step meeting. If that's true, that person deserves to be pilloried; I don't believe any of the 12 steps involves ratting out someone else in the group.
