On Christmas Eve night at two in the morning, the family of one of YG's schoolmates was awakened by a fire in their apartment. The father died in the fire; they lost everything they owned and the roof over their head. The school is collecting food, shoes, clothes, and money to help, which is a testimony to the community. I'm spending some time today trying to find clothes we can give--four kids, 13, 11, 7 and 5--and what we can afford to donate otherwise. I can't imagine how the mother is coping and keeping the kids together. I suppose one can't just lie down in the middle of one's life and refuse to cope, but I'd surely feel like it.
Edited to Add: For those of you who have offered help, right now (according to the school) what they chiefly need is clothing and money. For those who are able, checks (in any amount--this is a school of mostly-economically-disadvantaged familes, any anything is welcome and helpful) can be sent to George R. Moscone Elementary School, 2576 Harrison Street, San Francisco, CA 94110. Make any check payable to Moscone Elementary, with a notation that it's for the Garcia Family. And thanks, all of you. I'm conveying your sympathy to the principal, who will let the Garcias know how many people their story has touched.
