For a Big Birthday, a small but detailed cake. Jonquil asked for a "swashbuckling cake," preferably one with crossed swords. Lemon cake with raspberry filling, covered first with marzipan, then with fondant. So here it is. I am pardonably pleased with it (although, of course, next time I'll know all sorts of things I didn't know before).

The cup hilts on the rapiers are made from gum paste, brushed with bronze luster. Sadly, the silver luster, which was supposed to make the big rapier look silvery, didn't work. Also, sadly, the rapier's fondant was not, um. firm enough to hold its shape, and

And yet more cake

The lace on the glove is royal icing, built up in several layers. I am rather pleased with it. The grip of the big rapier is fondant with bronze luster (the bronze works better than the silver, but I don't know why).
The blue pimpernel was Sarcasm Girl's suggestion. Actually, she suggested the canonical scarlet, but I didn't think it would go as nicely as the blue. Rather than making a frosting flower, I drew the outline of the flower with royal icing, then diluted the icing to flow into the petals.

The photo I don't have is of [livejournal.com profile] jonquil's expression when she opened the box. That did my baker's heart good.
