Incoming/Outgoing Julie
6/9/15 15:29So back in May I promised Julie a fabric-shopping expotition as a birthday present. She needs a new costume for Dickens Fair this winter, so we set a date. Julie lives in Davis. We live in San Francisco. The plan was: she'd take a train down, we'd meet in Berkeley, and there would be much rejoicing. Of course, the BART between SF and the east bay is shut down this weekend, so I'd drive over.
And then someone jumped in front of the train in Sacramento, and it was delayed by two hours. So I drove up to Davis, acquired the girl, and thence to Berkeley and Discount Fabrics (where we found, as best as I can tell, ALL THE FABRIC). We were so efficient that we had a chance after that to go to Lacis--an amazing shop for lace makers, beaders, hat-makers, and boy-howdy anyone who works with pretty much anything thread-related. We gawped at all the things, bought nothing (although it was a close thing for the buckram Victorian bonnet form), and then, went to Baubles and Beads, where I was weak. I will say no more.
Then back to San Francisco. We took Julie out to dinner at our local favorite Italiian restaurant (Manzoni's, on Diamond Street. Delicious) and then came home and watched Tropic Thunder and an episode of NCIS (a sentimental journey--Julie used to dance to the NCIS theme when she was a slightly smaller person). She stayed over, we went out for breakfast, and now she is on her way back to Davis again.
Such a gratifyingly funny kid. And a good human. How did we get so lucky?
