Sixteen Candles
24/1/12 07:181) Avocado wanted a birthday tiara to wear to school today. I got her one with glitter, that says 16 in big pink numerals. She was delighted.
2) She wanted the tiara to have fur, which it didn't. So I got her a spangly pink feather boa. This pleased her too.
3) She appeared in our doorway at 12:01 last night and did a little "I'm Sixteen" dance.
4) She is looking back at the mixed success of her party with un-mixed delight, as if it represents some sort of maturational rubicon.
5) On the other hand, she's secure enough in herself to have come downstairs this morning toting "Blankie," her Holy Sacred Loved object.
6) She opened her presents, and did a little finger-dance of delight at each one (finger dance: making a goofy face and swaying back and forth while waving her forefingers like pistons).
7) Her alarm is set as a Klaxon horn--up periscope, Dive, Dive!
8) When her dad put on a medley of 1950s "sixteen" songs she looked pleased but embarrassed.
9) She's in one of her off-and-on reading frenzies, and brought home a stack of books from the library.
10) She's re-doing her room; first change, painting the wall of the stairwell with chalkboard paint so people can graffiti at will.
11) She wants to travel, so wants a mural on one wall with a map of the world into which she can stick push pins for future locations.
12) She brought home ALL ABOUT EVE from the library to watch with me (when our schedules mesh, which may not be ever...)
13) She's probably going to pester her dad into getting up (he had a late night last night) so she can drive to school)
14) Her GPA, so sad and soggy last semester, has returned to its usual highly polished self. The kid is nonchalant about it.
15) She's looking forward again.
16) She's a legitimately good, thoughtful, funny, honorable person, with just enough 16 smeared over it to make life interesting.
Happy birthday, Avocado.
