Because I really am clinically out of my mind, I decided to make a bonnet to go with the dress and the coat. Did I mention I'm crazy?

I occasionally hear mumbles about "Why bother with SFWA." There have been times in the past where the benefits of the organization were largely concerned with the entertainment value of brangling. But in the last decade or so the organization has worked to become increasingly relevant to writers' lives, dealing with a range of publishing and writing issues that directly affect its members. Plus: Writer Beware, Griefcom, legal assistance, the EMF (Emergency Medical Fund), the resurgent Speakers' Bureau. But SFWA has been hampered in some of these good works by the terms of its Massachusetts incorporation.

The organization is reincorporating as a California corporation, with a new status that will permit it to do things we've wanted to do for years--give medical assistance as a grant, rather than a loan, for instance. But to do that, we need an affirmative vote by 2/3 of the membership.

Because I've been on the sort-of-inside of SFWA off and on (Secretary a decade ago; head of the "service to SFWA" committee that was organized to acknowledge volunteers; Nebula commissioner) I have a real respect for the work of my peers--all volunteers taking time away from writing and other money-making work to keep the good work going. If you're a SFWA member, please vote.
