Signs of Grief
26/8/11 07:43This morning I have a post up at sarahtolerance.com about, of all things, mourning clothes and what they mean. As I was reading up on mourning, it seemed to me that the custom, meant to spare the bereaved unwanted attention and give them space to cope with their loss, could also be very isolating. Still, today, when one is urged to get on with her life, the notion of having, by social law, a defined period of time in which to feel whatever one must, is appealing.
PS: if anyone knows why the hems of mourning dresses were supposed to be at least three inches deep, please let me know. I've been puzzling over this.
