When I wrote about gothic romances a few weeks ago I started thinking about 1) why Jane Eyre, sometimes dismissed as the source of the genre, is not one, and 2) why it's my favorite book. Charlotte Brontë is not my favorite writer, but Gods, every time I read Jane Eyre I come away more impressed by it.
