I have now seen more political flyers than I want to see ever again. One theme of the newcomers vying against the incumbents: I will. I will balance the budget, stand up to special interests, protect the environment.

I understand that I will do my best or I will try isn't a particularly useful selling strategy. And positivism is a good thing. But one thing the incumbents have already learned: you don't get anything done in Washington by yourself. You bring a vote of One, and if you can't learn to build working relationships all you'll wind up doing is being a voice for your cause. I'd like to see a little less I will and a little more we will.

Oh, I can dream, can't I?
