Last night we went to see Avocado in her school Drama Club production of Aladdin. This was a big deal: they must have a budget, because they rented the costumes; the school orchestra was the orchestra, and rather than have the individual characters sing (apparently only some of them have decent voices) the songs were voiced by the school choir. The sets were not elaborate, but they were well-thought out and executed. It looked more like a high school than a middle school production, and did everyone proud.

And Avocado was evil. She played Jafar (the wicked vizier). With a drawn-on beard and darkened eyebrows, a tall, plumed turban and dark robes, she was unrecognizable as my adorable Girl Scout (or even as a female human) and kept her focus to excellent comic effect. The other kids were (by and large) terrific, although Aladdin kinda phoned it in; the girl who played Jasmine is a tall, willowy sixth-grader with a fine clear voice, and was particularly lovely. And the Genie was played by a short, highly energetic kid who sold every punch line like it was his last (well, Robin Williams's Genie is a hell of a thing to live up to). But Avocado-oh, my girl was so eeeeevil! It's nice to see her using that terrifying adolescent scowl for purposed evil rather than mere household petulance.

Afterward we all (the Spouse, Sarcasm Girl and the Beau, Avocado, [livejournal.com profile] klages--who had very patiently come along for the festivities--and I) went out for pizza, which was its own antic fun.

And this morning, when we are meant to be selling cookies all day--it is bright and sunny, and A has begged off cookieing until tomorrow. I suppose, after four performances and an Algebra test yesterday, she's entitled to a little down time. Whatever will happen, in terms of hitting her goals, will happen. And she's admitted that maybe next year when she's in high school, she won't be selling cookies. Imagine my sorrow...

ETA: As the Spouse notes, she's already been cast in her next role, for Drama class: "Now leaving Jafar. Next stop: Lady Macbeth."
