A Modest Proposal
29/9/09 07:02Okay. Perhaps inevitably, abortion opponents on both sides of the Congressional aisle are attempting to attach language to Health Care legislation denying any coverage for abortion. There is, after all, extant legislation stating that taxpayer money cannot be used to subsidize abortion; however, it's for damned certain that private insurers are going to take any excuse to avoid covering something.
Well and good. So here's my proposal. Given the significant health hazard posed by guns--even legally owned and operated guns--in this country, and the drain on medical and financial resources that gun injury represents, isn't it only fair that gun control legislation be attached to Health Care? I'm not talking eradicating gun ownership or outlawing guns; no abridging the right to bear arms. Just, maybe, requiring arms-bearers to have the same degree of training and caution that we theoretically require of drivers.
I'm kidding, of course. Reasonable health care legislation is in enough jeopardy without sinking it entirely under the weight of gun control. It's just a thought.
