Well, this seems to be what all the cool kids are doing, so here I am.
It is the First of May. When I was a young Madrobins I belonged to a performance group, the Company of the Silver Swan, which did May Day celebrations, raising and decorating and dancing a maypole in Central Park, putting on a spring play (usually either a Robin Hood play or an epic battle between Old King Winter and the Upstart Spring, with lots of stage combat) and dancing jigs on 5th Avenue to draw in an audience. This led to many adventures. The last time I danced a maypole was nineteen years ago, when I was nine months pregnant with my older daughter (I delivered two days later). We had a tradition that any woman who danced the 'pole was automatically restored to virginity on May morning, so as to be all pure when dancing (the better, I suppose, to be ravished later in the day). How my vast belly squared with all that, I know not.
According to my records this also means that the woman playing piano loudly in the other room will be nineteen on Sunday. How did that happen?
Happy May Day. May your day be full of music, dance, balmy air and renewal of whatever sort pleases you best.
