Avocado is going to the bar mitzvah of one of her best buddies at school on Saturday. She wants to know what she should give him (other than the traditional $$). Anyone have any thoughts? The only bar mitzvah (or bat mitzvah) gifts I have given have been as an adult to a younger person, not as peer to peer, so I am Dept. of Clueless. All suggestions cheerily entertained.

ETA I should add that the celebrant is male, so spa gift certificates are kind of out. And, while she considers him a good friend, the question "What is he into?" got a vacant, panicked shrug and the question, "Can't I give money? He can always use money!" So that's our fallback position, but I have to say it seems a little impersonal to me. Kids these days.

Obama today (aside from taking the oath of office again to assuage the wingnuts) made firm commitments to transparency; froze his immediate staff's salaries, told lobbyists when and where they can work in his administration, and--oh, yeah, gave the order to close Guantanamo within 365 days (sooner rather than later, I hope...but I do understand why they can't just shoo everyone out, give them a plane ticket, and say "Seeya bye! Been fun!").

Still living in the land of hope and possibility.
