Information, I Implore
4/12/07 23:55So I just caught the last fifteen minutes of Le Roi de Coeur, which I hadn't seen since my salad days (endive, bok choy, dill, thyme, and a little watercress). My recollection is that at the end Charles, ordered to the front, decides against war entirely and retreats to the asylum where, by the time the Sisters answer the doorbell, he is standing naked, holding only a birdcage. My recollection is that that's the last shot of the film. However, in the version I just saw on cable there's another scene: Charles, in the white uniform and cunning little square cap of the asylum inmates, is building a house of cards with the other inmates, while they discuss the rules--or lack thereof--of the game they're playing.
Does anyone know if this was a "restored scene" added in later, or the way the film ends overseas or something? Neither the Spouse nor I remember that terminal scene; both of us recall the film ending with Charles at the gates of the asylum. Inquiring minds are inquiring.
