From Today's Dear Abby:

DEAR ABBY: I have a 4-year-old who tends to act up from time to time. I have tried "time-outs" and even soft spanking and have taken his privileges away. Nothing seems to work. However, I have found that smashing one of his small toys with a hammer works well. Do you see any danger in this form of punishment? -- YOUNG MOM IN OKLAHOMA

I'm not sure this could be a joke--the Abby organization appears to vet letters before they print them. A four-year-old who tends to act up from time to time sounds like a pretty normal four year old. You don't get instant compliance from a normal four year old. You keep doing the time-outs and taking away the privileges and sooner or later the kid gets the message.
