Today is Alan Rickman's birthday. Happy Birthday, Chevalier.

Sarcasm Girl is home sick today. (I know. Unprecedented.) So after everyone else had left the house I sat down to have my coffee and check my email, when the phone rings. It's SG, calling from her cell upstairs, asking, in die-away tones, if I could bring her a big glass of water and some Advil.

This has been an emerging thing in our household: the cell phone as intercom. YG calls my cell to ask me to come check her homework. SG calls downstairs from her room to ask when dinner is. YG, after a huge blow-out with the family, texts us all to ask us to meet her in her room for an apology. I thought we got the cell phones to make calls to people outside the house. (Of course, I never thought that the texting feature would be used to keep me posted on the minutiae of my daughters' school days...from school. Silly me.)

The kid is upstairs sleeping. With her cell phone to hand, just in case.
