An Actor's Life
26/1/07 08:43My older daughter wants to be an actress. In fact, she is an actress, but she wants to do it professionally. Having wanted the same thing for many years myself, I have some idea of what she faces; I looked at the trials of an actor's life and decided to become a writer instead (because writing is so stable). So I worry about the kid; she's gorgeous and talented and passionate, but so are many people who spend their lives chasing the dream.
Then, this morning, IMDB informed me that it's Charles Lane's birthday. If you've seen a movie or TV show in the last eighty years or so you've seen him: he was in 42nd Street and It's a Wonderful Life, Gold Diggers of 1933 and You Can't Take it With You; on TV he was on Perry Mason and The Beverley Hillbillies and LA Law. In all, IMDB lists 328 credits between 1931 and 1995. He's never been a star, but he has one of those faces you immediately recognize, and a persona (irrascible) that you got at once. That's a career with legs, a working career.
Charles Lane is 102 today. I wish him health and happiness, which is just what I wish for my daughter.
