Mom's Weekend Out
20/11/06 20:02This weekend I was in Portland at Orycon. I had a grand time; four panels that went pretty well (even the one I found I was moderating when I got to the panel), a reading (there were people there, which is the sum total of my criterion for a successful reading--sitting in a room by yourself feeling unloved is just pathetic), and "Whose Line Is It, Anyway," in which
klages and I were both players. Saw many people, ate and drank too much, talked and laughed. On Sunday evening, after the con had wound down, I went to dinner with Ellen, Eileen Gunn and John Berry, Cory Doctorow and Ursula LeGuin, who was funny and deightful, and shared a piece of coconut cream pie ("pick up pie!"). Then home again, home again, jiggety jig.
In the middle of all this, Spouse was home taking care of the family. Sunday morning he got a call from one of his sibs, saying that their father had had a mild heart attack. Many calls back and forth, Maybe father hadn't had a heart attack. Maybe he'd just had chest pains. Maybe he took two nitro pills when he should have only taken one. Maybe the various calls to the cousin who's a neurologist were ill-advised. Maybe it's really nothing. Poor man was up and down and panicked and irritated at all the run-in-circles-scream-and-shout stuff. Turns out his father is fine And in the middle of all that he took YG down to the skating rink to try out for the Tremors, the synchronized skating team. Good news: she made the cut, and will start practicing with the Tremors after Christmas. The bad news: she fell and wacked her knee. This morning Spouse took her in for X-rays. She's okay, no serious damage, but she'll be on crutches for a few days. While he's calling me in Oregon this morning to relate all this, my lovely aunt Julie calls from New Jersey, where she's visiting, needing some family data. Then the realtor in charge of selling my father's house in Massachusetts calls, wondering about a couple of details. So between here and there it was an eventful day.
And of course the house is a mess, and I need to buy a turkey and stuff. All will be well, and I sleep in my own bed tonight, which is a plus.
