Among other things, this weekend I got to be one of the team that interviewed potential principals for YG's school. The outgoing principal is a powerhouse, and the school is very successful, particularly because it has what is locally termed "an historically underachieving population." So we don't want anything much to change, and need someone who will honor and value what the school has and does; but we also need someone with energy and ideas. So, bright and reasonably shiny on Saturday morning nine of us from our school met with four candidates, under the aegis of a moderator from the Board of Ed. The process is fascinating--hedged round in systems intended to make the whole business as neutral and immune to fakery, favoritism or prejudice as possible. I was also (as were my peers) sworn to silence about the process and the candidates, so that's about all I can say. I don't yet know when we find out who our principal will be (the final decision rests with the SFUSD) but at least we don't face the new school year principal-less.
