In Which I'm Cranky
4/2/06 09:23Maybe it's because I had some Chinese food the other day which seems to be enacting a slow but unpleasant vengeance, but my tolerance for small things is very low. This is unfortunate because Younger Girl has a full docket today: taking two friends to ice skating for the free skate after her lesson; having a playdate afterward; then going to a Girl Scout Swim party at 3:30. What I'm saying is that I'm feeling grumpy, and no one should pay the least attention to what I say. But. I know language morphs over time, and things change. Yet I am irritated by hearing people refer to a minister of some sort as "a reverend." Reverend modifies mister, as in The Reverend Mr. Smith or The Very Reverend The Archbishop of Wanglemutter. According to my sketchy understanding, calling someone Reverend as a title is like calling someone Holy. As in "Well, Holy Wanglemutter, what do you think of the situation of Chinese immigrants in Lithuania?" In speaking this doesn't bother me so much, but I've come across it in print and in blogs several times in the alst couple of days, and it just bothers me.
But maybe that's the Chinese food talking.
