• This morning's Times Magazine had an ad which puzzles me exceedingly. The headline read: "Will people think of you as someone who read the latest books, or as someone who provided future scientists with the texts they needed?" It's for The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, which I am sure is deeply worthy as a recipient of donations. But when/how/why did there become an either/or choice between being well-read or supporting the sciences? Does the Weizmann Institute know that the stupidity of this would keep me from sending them a dime?
• Also in the Times Magazine, a series of Questions for Gary Hart. He's considering taking a job as a professor at some unnamed university. He hasn't been in politics since he was famously knocked out of the presidential race in 1987. He's written a book on national security, due out next month. But no where does it mention what the man has been doing to support himself since '87. He looks well fed, well groomed and well-dressed. I have to assume he has some income. Just wondering how he has been earning his living.
• Anyone actually tried the "Airborne" cold prevention supplement? Does "developed by a schoolteacher" make you feel any more confident about the product than "developed by a scientist working in a large, well-provisioned lab"
