Arlen's Man
6/9/05 21:17Elsewhere,
janni was discussing "Tam Lin," and a rather bloodcurdling idea she had for a story based on the song. Which led, through various byways, to an idea I had some years ago for a story based on "Matty Groves." Matty goes to church one day and winds up in bed with the wife of Lord Arlen, who is conveniently out of town. That which does not intrude upon our notice might, perhaps, never upset us...but Arlen's manservant sees what's happening and hies himself off to town to inform his master of what the Lady of the Manor has been doing. Result: dead lover, dead wife (though, because she's "of noble kin" she gets buried on top. Cold comfort, that.)
And what I've always wondered is: why would Arlen's man make such a point of running all the way to London to rat out his mistress? I have an idea, see. I just have to write it.
