The SFUSD School Board voted unanimously last night to change the 2010-2011 school schedule so that school starts the first week in August and ends in May.

Aside from my (well documented) personal dismay about this...I just hate it. I can't even articulate why it bothers me so much; it just bothers me so much.

What was their reasoning?

The point is 1) to have the end of the semester fall before the Christmas break so that kids won't have to study over the break; 2) to have a longer Christmas break so that families that go traveling will have more time; 3) to bring the school year into line with the City College schedule so that high school students taking CC courses won't be at a disadvantage. To quote from an email on the Parents for Public Schools listserve: "Last night the BOE voted unanimously to accept the 2010 calendar changes. The Teacher's Union also accepted the new calendar changes with a 55% vote in favor. Dennis Kelly testified that although teachers are losing one week of vacation time that they would not be able to make up, they are willing to try this new schedule out.

For people who can only take their vacations in August, or who have kids (like mine) who have camp through most of August, this is a mess. Next year we're going to have to choose between letting Avocado skip the first two weeks of her freshman year of high school or the last two weeks of her last summer at her beloved camp. Which is no choice at all--but frankly, if I didn't think they'd give her spot away, I'd let her stay at camp.
