Goodwill

Not the thrift shop. I've been trying to figure out what it was about Rise of the Planet of the Apes that so irritated me, and over at madeleinerobins.com I think I've finally pinpointed it. In the first ten minutes they lost me, and never got me back. I may be in the minority, given that Apes is still #1 at the box office, but the more I think about it, the more disappointed--and therefore irritated--I am about the movie.

10th Grade

Per the SFUSD, summer is over. Avocado started 10th grade this morning, leaving the house five minutes ago with her new bag, new school supplies, new dress and boots, her hair clean (she has just discovered home-made herbal shampoo and conditioners and is evangelizing, while I mention humbly that I was doing this stuff 30 years ago) and her makeup tasteful but cute.

It's nice that she has been, for weeks now, "really excited for the new school year." She read Taming of the Shrew and Julius Caesar for her summer reading, and took notes for her AP World class, and intends to hit the ground at a run. For my part, I fed her, made her lunch, and wished her a brilliant day. At this point in our lives, that's about all I can do (except for mend a hole in her patterned tights, with her in the tights) but that seems to be all she needs.
