California News
1) A California Court has ruled that homeschoolers must be taught by a certified teacher. And the requirements for certification are not trivial: in addition to a BA, the teacher (presumably a parent) must complete several post-graduate classes or programs in basic literacy, the Constitution, math, etc. Me, I'm in awe of anyone who can successfully homeschool (by which I mean: educate their kids at least as well as a public school in terms of breadth of information covered, without wanting to kill the kids). I can just see explosions priming around the state on this one.
2) In the Department of San Francisco is So San Francisco: the Board of Supervisors has approved a measure to install 2' x 2' human shaped brass plaques on sidewalks around the city, to memorialize the death of homeless persons. "Bruce Wadsworth died here, January 21, 2000" or something like that. Aside from the potential impact on the tourist industry ("Come to Foggy San Francisco, City of the Dead!"), this seems like a well-intentioned dumb idea. Honor the memory of these people by spending the money to help the living, Guys. Interestingly, even one of the co-sponsors of the measure now doesn't remember anything about it.
3) My dog is on crack. No, really. I gave her one of those rubber squeaky balls yesterday, and it's all she wants. It's a little scary. We just barely got her to eat breakfast this morning. Holy cow.
4) Demolition on the kitchen starts on Monday. I have barely scratched the surface of the kitchen pack-up, and tomorrow all day I'm going to be selling Girl Scout cookies with Avocado. Guess what I'll be doing on Sunday (and why, I pause to ask, am I the one who's doing all the packing?
